On the year of our 40th anniversary we’ve been looking back at all the positive changes our colleagues made to the lives of hundreds of children and their families over years and how School-Home Support has adapted through challenging times to show up for families and schools.
40 years later, low school attendance rates are still very high, with a staggering 1.5 million children missing days, months and years of their essential education. The school attendance crisis leaves the future life chances of thousands of children at risk. These children could face unemployment, become victims of criminal activities, and perpetuate intergenerational cycles of poverty.
Families today are facing unprecedented challenges today. These struggles are making it harder for families to keep their children in school, leaving many young people falling through the cracks. Some of the most common issues families present are:

At School-Home Support we work with schools, children and their families and policy makers to create long-lasting positive impacts in the lives of those who need us most. We do this by building trust, resilience and skills within families; supporting schools with hands-on, practical interventions and sharing best practice on whole family support and early intervention strategies; and advocating for policy changes and investment in education.
Data from our latest Impact Report shows that in 2023/2024, we directly supported 5,937 individual family members, which is a 13% increase on last year.

In order to achieve our ambitious mission, we’ve created a route map calling on the Government to commit to an ambitious ‘moonshot’ goal to see every child in school and ready to learn by 2050. This can only be achieved by investing in a support-led and family-centric approach, with ‘radical collaboration’ between all partners, and with a focus on understanding and removing barriers to attendance.
Our practitioners play a vital role in bridging the gap between home and school, offering families the tailored support they need to overcome barriers to education.

From creating personalised attendance plans to offering emotional support, our practitioners work not only with children but with the whole family unit to make sure none is left behind.
