We were thrilled to be able to offer one of our partner schools the opportunity to take part in a creative writing competition, courtesy of our fantastic partners, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.

The competition began with a creative writing session delivered to two year 5 classes, highlighting the key components of story writing. The sessions were run by Director of Pro Bono & Corporate Responsibility at Weil and author, Rob Powell, who has published five children’s books. Rob sparked the children’s imaginations throughout the session, and asked the children to write a story based on the title ‘If I were King or Queen for the day’

“The pupils really engaged in the creative writing workshop which reflected the quality of the stories entered into the competition. Our volunteer judges had a tough time in deciding on the winners – well done to all of the pupils!” – Rob Powell, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP

The children had one week to write up their stories before submitting them for judging by Weil employees. We received 17 excellent submissions that were judged by Weil volunteers, and the winners were finally chosen with great difficulty.

One of the judges, Sarah Chase, commented on her experience of judging:

“It is such a rewarding experience judging the Creative Writing Competition: the creativity, use of language and sheer exuberance of the writing were wonderful!”

Rob and Sarah then attended the school to present the winners with their Amazon vouchers! The excitement in the classroom was apparent as six lucky winners were awarded their certificates and given £30 Amazon vouchers! The classroom had a lovely atmosphere as the pupils celebrated with their friends.

“I really enjoyed attending the school to present the winners’ certificates. The children were so welcoming and enthusiastic. They clearly enjoyed taking part. I am sure there are lots of budding authors, journalists and bloggers in their midst” – Sarah Chase, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP
